Hi, my name is Dmitriy Shvets: Dima for short. I am a landscape and seascape artist based in Long Island, NY. I have enjoyed making art since an early age. Using whatever materials I could find, I would doodle on scraps of paper much to the amusement of my friends and often classmates. Having set aside art to pursue a career in the environmental sciences, I have since rediscovered it. Art to me went from being something that should be relegated to a hobby to being a calling in life that must be pursued. A majority of my art is nature themed and I now study the environment from an artistic perspective.

I enjoy making art because of the challenge it provides, because of how well it communicates emotion and the joy it brings to others. My art collection is based on the places I have visited. Each piece captures the defining character of the location and communicates it to the viewer. My goal is to connect the viewer with memories of a place they have visited.

I paint with oil colors, because I like how workable they are and their ability to capture the colors found in nature. I also like the translucent effect created by the careful layering of oil color. When painting, I build up layers of paint and detail as I go. To say that the finished product is an exact expression of my initial vision would be a lie. My vision develops as the painting progresses from one stage to the next. I often discover and explore new ideas, coming back to rework the art piece. Only when this journey of exploration is fully finished do I consider a painting finished.

I am inspired by the impressionist artists, most notably Claude Monet. The vibrancy of color and the play of light found in their work has drawn me to their artworks. Their courage to move away from painting common subjects of the era to painting landscapes resonates with me as an artist and an individual.

In 2011, I created this web site and Dmitriy Shvets Fine Art, a company which promotes and sells my art. I work closely with a local Long Island fine art printer to create the art prints sold on this web site. By making my work available for purchase as art prints, I hope to share my art with many individuals and to inspire others to pursue their dreams.
